How to use a safety harness on roof isn't a puzzle if you break it down. I've built my career around making sure workers have the right equipment before the truck leaves the yard, and I've handled something like 300 rush orders over 8 years—maybe 280, I'd have to check the CRM. A lot of those started with the same sentence: 'I thought it was fine.'

This checklist is for anyone who buys, rents, or wears fall protection on roofs. It's not a replacement for the manufacturer's instructions or your own rescue plan. It's a field checklist that follows the same flow I use to catch problems before they become accidents. There are 7 steps. Some will sound obvious. Step 6 is the one most people skip.

Step 1: The Anchor Point Is the First Question

In March 2024, a roofing contractor called me at 4:20 on a Friday. Their job started Monday and they needed replacement harnesses because 'the harnesses are bad.' I asked about their anchor point. There was a long pause. The harnesses were fine. The real issue was a roof jack that had rusted through and a crew that hadn't been taught how to set an independent anchor.

Don't start with the harness. Start with where it attaches.

OSHA's construction fall protection standard (29 CFR 1926.501) requires fall protection for workers at 6 feet above a lower level with an unprotected side or edge. Personal fall arrest anchorages must support at least 5,000 pounds per employee (1926.502(d)). Verify current requirements at osha.gov and your own rescue plan before you rely on that summary.

An anchor can be an engineered roof anchor, a rated beam strap, or a certified temporary anchor point installed by a qualified person. If you can't point to it and prove its rating, you don't have a fall arrest system. You have a flag.

Step 2: Inspect the Harness, Lanyard, and SRL Before It Gets Worn

Take 60 seconds. Check the webbing for cuts, abrasions, UV damage, chemical burns, or pulled stitches. Look at the tag for the date of manufacture and the recommended inspection schedule. Check the lanyard and snap hooks. The locking mechanism should snap back and seat fully. If anything feels sticky or loose, retire it.

This is where experience has a number behind it: in one quarter, our field rep did 47 quick inspections for contractors, and 11 of those turned up a harness or lanyard that should have been retired before someone wore it. More than 20 percent is too high.

If you use a self-retracting lifeline, pay attention to where the cable touches edges. A sharp roof edge can cut a synthetic line faster than you think.

Step 3: Fit the Harness Like It Matters

Put on the harness the way the manufacturer says. Dorsal ring on your back, between the shoulder blades. Chest strap positioned across your sternum, not your throat. Leg straps snug enough that you can't slide your whole hand between the strap and your leg.

And if you're wearing coveralls for men—especially cotton or canvas ones—make sure they're not so baggy that they bunch up under the straps. Loose fabric creates pressure points and can hide a twisted strap. Elastic cuff coveralls are a better fit for roofing work, period.

Step 4: Connect to the Dorsal D-Ring, Not Just Any Ring

Use the dorsal D-ring for fall arrest. Side D-rings are for positioning. The front D-ring on some harnesses is for climbing or rescue, not for connecting a shock lanyard and walking around. This is one of those simple rules that gets repeated until people nod without thinking. It's still a red flag when someone ignores the manufacturer's label.

What I mean is that a harness is not a piece of clothing you put on and forget once it's buckled—it's a personal fall arrest system, and that system is only as strong as the weakest component between your back and whatever is holding you.

If you're using a branded system like Guardian fall protection, keep the manual in the truck. Those systems have different hardware for different sizes and applications. A universal harness is a no-brainer for one-off jobs, but it's no excuse to skip checking the labels.

Step 5: Put On the Rest of Your PPE Before You Tie Off

On a roof, a harness is only one layer of the system. Your eyes have no backup. This is why I keep a set of edge-eyewear in every field bag I own. Step 6: Do the Tug Test Before You Lean Over the Edge

This is the step that gets cut when people are late. I get it. It looks like you're standing there pulling your lanyard for no reason. But it takes five seconds and it proves the connection chain from your harness to the anchor is closed.

Here's how: get to the edge, stand a comfortable distance away, and lean back against the system with your knees bent. Put your weight on the harness. Pull the lanyard or SRL line toward the anchor, then release it. If the snap hook is seated, the line moves a little and comes tight. If something pops, clicks wrong, or the lanyard doesn't tighten, stop.

A roof edge is not a place to learn about a damaged snap hook. That lesson has a very high tuition.

Step 7: Know When a Harness Is the Wrong Answer

There is no harness that fixes a missing anchor. There is no harness that fixes a roof edge with no fall protection plan. If you cannot find a rated anchor point, if the roof surface is too slippery, if the wind is at the point where you cannot maintain balance, stop. The emergency call I get most often is not for missing equipment. It's for equipment that was on site but couldn't be used because nobody had planned the anchor installation ahead of time.

Bottom line: a harness that doesn't get used is just expensive laundry. A harness that gets used wrong is worse. If in doubt, delay the job.

Two Mistakes That Keep Showing Up

Mistake 1: The 'Budget Harness' Math

I understand the appeal of cheap gear. The 'budget harness' choice looked smart until a compliance inspector pulled it out of service for missing certification tags. The contractor had to pay for a rush replacement order to keep the crew working. The upside was saving $90. The risk was a failed inspection—or worse. The math didn't work.

I learned years ago never to assume that ordering a harness means anyone knows where the anchor point will go. Buy from a manufacturer that can verify recall status and inspection history. This isn't a luxury. It's a paperwork problem that can become a safety problem.

Mistake 2: 'I've Never Fallen, So It's Fine'

That's like saying your fire extinguisher is fine because you've never had a fire. Lanyards degrade. UV kills webbing. The elastic inside a shock absorber gets brittle. If your harness has an inspection label, use it. If it doesn't have a label, that's a red flag, not an invitation.

Checklist, Short Version

  • Anchor: identified, rated, installed by a qualified person.
  • Harness: inspected, fitted, no twisted straps.
  • Connector: lanyard or SRL free of damage, connections locked.
  • PPE: eye protection, coveralls, gloves, hard hat—worn, not carried.
  • Test: tug test at the edge before loading.
  • Judgment: if the anchor isn't there, the answer is no.

That's it. Done.

You don't need to memorize a safety manual. You do need to remember that a harness is a system, and a system is only as good as the part you forgot to check.

Take it from someone who has seen too many Friday calls turn into weekend deliveries: the cheapest hour to catch a problem is before the climb.
