When I first started ordering PPE for a 40-person crew, I assumed safety glasses were the easiest line item on the list. Pick a model, check the case count, done. Three years and roughly $28,000 of wasted budget later, I found out how wrong that was.
I’ve now been handling PPE orders for 6 years, and I’ve personally made, and documented, 11 significant buying mistakes. Some were small, some were embarrassing, and all were expensive. I keep a checklist now so our team doesn’t repeat them. If you buy safety glasses for a site or a small crew, this 7-step checklist is what I wish someone had handed me on day one.
The product family we order is often written as edge-eyewear on invoices. I’ve ordered Edge Eyewear Delano G2 safety glasses more times than I can count, and Edge Eyewear Robson safety glasses at least twice. That’s why the checklist below isn’t about one brand. It’s about the way I check every brand, including the ones I trust.
The checklist I use now
Step 1: Identify the hazard before the brand
The most expensive mistake I made in my first year wasn’t picking the wrong frame. It was ordering before anyone asked why. A flying chip is a different problem than a chemical splash or a glare issue. OSHA’s eye protection rule, 29 CFR 1910.133, says the eyewear has to be appropriate for the hazard. That sounds basic, but it’s the step that gets skipped most.
If a request says Edge Eyewear Delano G2 safety glasses, I don’t argue with the model. I ask what job they’ll do. If the answer is grinding, I need a high-impact lens. If it’s pouring chemicals, I need a different style entirely. The model number only matters after the hazard is clear.
Step 2: Read the lens marking, not the product title
On a safety lens, the marking tells you what it passed. In the U.S., ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is the standard to look for. Z87 means basic impact. Z87+ means high impact. For grinding or cutting, I order Z87+.
I’m honestly not sure why so many product pages show a big nice photo and hide this number. Maybe it’s because the photo works better as marketing. But the marking matters more than any adjective. If the listing doesn’t show the marking, I assume it isn’t there.
Step 3: Order samples before you order cases
Fit is not a cosmetic detail. People won’t wear glasses that hurt, and eyewear that isn’t worn is just wasted money. I once ordered 120 pairs of a cheaper frame because the price worked. 47 of them came back because they pinched. That was $1,890 down the drain plus a one-week delay. I still kick myself for not catching it with three sample pairs.
Now I order a few samples and pass them to the people who will actually wear them. The Delano G2 fits a wide face differently than the Robson. Both are decent products, but neither is one-size-fits-all.
Step 4: Ask for coating test reports, not adjectives
Anti-fog, hard coat, polarized, blue light — words are cheap. Under FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), performance claims have to be substantiated. That doesn’t mean the vendor has to publish a report, but it means a real one should exist. So I ask for it.
In November 2022, I ordered an anti-fog model based on the product description. On the first cool morning, the lenses fogged up before the parking lot cleared. The vendor couldn’t produce a coating test report. That wasn’t a huge order, but it was a huge annoyance. The surprise wasn’t that a small vendor later sent a report before I asked. It was that a bigger-name vendor couldn’t do the same.
Step 5: Ask about prescriptions instead of assuming
If any of your people wear prescription glasses, that changes the order. Some safety glasses fit over prescription frames, some have Rx inserts, and some are just not an option for that person. I used to assume they’d take out contacts. Contacts do not protect the eye from impact. And if the over-glasses don’t fit, they’ll end up in a drawer.
The question should be asked before ordering, not after the cases arrive. This is the step I still get wrong more often than I’d like.
Step 6: Plan for spares, damage, and replacement
Scratched or cracked lenses need to be replaced. If you don’t keep spare pairs in rotation, someone will keep wearing a damaged pair because there’s nothing else. That’s a risk no brand can fix.
For a typical 20-person crew, I try to keep at least 3 spare pairs per model in the cabinet. If the job involves grinding or heavy dust, I keep more. It’s not exciting, but it’s what makes the checklist useful.
Step 7: Re-verify before every reorder
Don’t auto-reorder the same model just because it’s convenient. People change, jobs change, and even the same model can be updated without a warning. I set a simple rule: every reorder goes through the same 7 steps, even if it’s the same item. It takes about 20 minutes, and it has caught worse mistakes than the original setup.
Where else this bites
The same failure shows up outside eye protection. People search for carbon monoxide detector vs smoke detector, and I get it: two boxes, both beep, both on the wall. But they detect different risks. Pick the wrong one and the alarm only gives you a false sense of safety.
Boots are the same. If someone asks for Merrell tactical boots, I ask where they’ll be used. The name is not the spec; sole material and tread pattern are. That’s also how I got burned on a black aluminum fence once. It looked clean and modern, but the spacing didn’t meet the local code and the whole thing had to be redone. It wasn’t PPE, but the mistake was identical: I bought the look before I checked the requirement.
What I won’t tell you
I’m not a safety engineer or an optometrist. If a job needs welding shade, laser protection, or medical-grade eye protection, I won’t pretend to know which model is right. I trust someone who tells me where their expertise ends. A vendor once said, “This isn’t our strength—here’s who does it better.” That vendor earned our account for everything else.
And one final warning: if a sales page says a pair of glasses is indestructible or offers 100 percent protection against every hazard, stop reading. That’s not how impact testing works. Markings and test reports are about proving performance under specific conditions. They aren’t magic.
