In March 2021, I stood in our supply closet doing a silent victory lap. I'd just ordered 100 pairs of safety glasses for $340. That's $3.40 per pair for "ANSI Z87.1 compliant" wraparound eyewear. The safety store down the road wanted $15 for similar glasses.

I remember showing the invoice to our shop foreman. "Look at this," I said. "Same standard, a third of the price."

The Fog Problem

  1. Treat compliance marks as the floor, not the ceiling. "ANSI Z87.1" and "ASTM F2413" are minimum standards. They don't tell you how a product performs on day 87. And before you say "compliance is enough," remember that OSHA's eye protection standard (29 CFR 1910.133) requires protection to be adequate for the specific work being performed. There's a gap between minimum compliance and adequate protection.
  2. Total cost is what matters. Sticker price + injury risk + replacement frequency + your team's willingness to use the gear. That last one is huge — the best safety gear in the world is worthless if it sits in a locker.
  3. Test before you scale. Get samples. Put them in workers' hands. Ask what they think. They're the ones who wear it every day.
  4. Context is king. This worked for us because we're a mid-size fabrication shop in a dry climate with predictable operations. If you run a coastal operation or deal with chemical hazards, your needs will be different. Your mileage may vary.

We still use Amazon for certain things. But safety glasses? Steel toe shoes? Those are non-negotiable now.
