What I'm telling you is to compare the right numbers. Stop comparing purchase price. Compare cost per use, and factor in what non-compliance costs.

  • How long will this item actually last in your environment?
  • Will your team wear it, or will it become a locker ornament?
  • If an injury happens because the gear failed, what's the real cost?

That last question is why ANSI Z87.1 certification is only a starting point. Two glasses can both meet the same standard and feel completely different on a real workshift. Fog resistance, frame durability, comfort—those determine whether people wear them at all.

A Field Tech Asked Me About Pepper Spray and Dogs

Here's a strange example that tied all of this together. One of our field technicians asked me the other day: "can you use pepper spray on dogs?"

He'd been bitten twice doing check-ins at residential properties, so he was looking at the cheapest little spray canister he could find online. My first response was, "No, that's not in your job scope." But his question wasn't silly. It was a real safety problem, and he was reaching for the only solution he knew.

We didn't buy the spray. Instead, we put him through a proper field-safety course, gave him a route-planning app, and reviewed our scheduling to keep him out of repeat-incident neighborhoods. That cost more than a pepper spray canister would have. And it was exactly the right call—because solving the actual problem, not just the surface symptom, is what total-cost thinking is about.

What I'd Tell Anyone in My Position

I get asked whether we order directly from edge-eyewear or use a distributor. My answer: we now buy from brands that focus on one category, and we don't cheap out on the features that determine compliance. Anti-fog, properly matched lens tints, durable frames, a recognizable safety eyewear lineup—those are worth the extra $3 to $4 per pair.

Here's my bottom line: the cheapest PPE is rarely the most cost-effective PPE. It's not about being fancy. It's about looking at the full lifecycle, treating worker compliance as part of the cost, and recognizing that a single eye injury destroys every "saving" you got from a budget SKU.

I'd rather explain to finance why I spent $4 more per pair than tell an employee's family why $1.20 glasses cost them their vision. Once you've done the math, that's an easy choice.
